In the broadcast series Burst Angel (2004), an ultra-violent future is depicted where everyone carries guns, and the Recent Armed Police of Tokyo (RAPT) is working to restore order. However, their involvement in unsavory activities, ranging from murder to biomedical experiments, complicates the situation.
Wimpy aspiring pastry chef Kyohei finds himself unknowingly embroiled in the chaos when he takes an after-school job cooking for four gun-toting women mercenaries who are under the command of a mysterious boss. Despite his reluctance, Kyohei is dragged into violent missions against thugs, cybots, and RAPT agents. It's reminiscent of watching Keitaro from Love, Hina team up with the Knight Sabers from Bubblegum Crisis.
Sei, Meg, Amy, and Jo are typical anime warriors who don revealing "fan service" costumes as they combat their murderous enemies. The series is filled with blood, explosions, and weightless CG mecha, but lacks in storytelling and character development. Rated TV 14 for violence, grotesque imagery, profanity, and depictions of alcohol and drug use, Burst Angel may appeal to fans of action-packed anime. --Charles Solomon
